Community History and Archives Service- Smethwick Library

The Community History and Archives Service (CHAS) collects and preserves original archives and published material relating to the history of all of Sandwell. If you are interested in finding out more about local history or tracing your family tree, CHAS holds a vast wealth of material to help you.

MADE would like to thank the staff at CHAS for their help and guidance throughout the project. The archives service provided a welcome base for our staff and volunteers that have been digitising the lighthouse order books so that we may make the Change Glass Works archive a more accessible to the public. Maureen Waldron and Ian Gray at CHAS have also been part of the MADE steering group for ‘Everybody’s Story’; their enthusiasm for the project and their wealth of experience has uplifted our team and proved invaluable.

We estimate that we archived around 16,000 pages of lighthouse order books during our time at the archives service, our research groups will continue to transcribe and work with CHAS into the foreseeable future. MADE, its staff and volunteers have made friends for life at Smethwick Library.

Visit them, and support this important service.
